Aussie animals in winter: Tidbinbilla Orienteering challenge – Tidbinbilla School Holiday Program

Do you know what “torpor” is? Are you keen to test your orienteering skills while learning about the behaviours and adaptions of Australian animals that ensure they are suited to our climate?

Join Ranger Rach to adventure on the Tidbinbilla orienteering short course pausing at each marker to learn more!

This activity will be held over a large area and will involve crossing the road. Children must be supervised by an attending adult at all times.

Finding our favourite animals means looking for clues, like tracks, nests, or scratch marks on trees. This fun activity teaches kids the sleuthing skills they need to spot species in the wild.

Rock-wallaby Wander – Tidbinbilla School Holiday Program

Have you ever seen a brush-tailed rock-wallaby? Not in the wild in the ACT that’s for sure! This species was last seen in the wild in the ACT in 1959 – at Tidbinbilla. With the success of our Threatened Species breeding program, and partnerships, brush-tailed rock-wallaby’s can again be seen at Tidbinbilla – behind predator proof fences where they can live their lives in safety.

Join a member of the Threatened Species Team for a walk along the Barayngu Murawung track for a chance to see these elusive animals. You will find out all about this species, why it has disappeared and what the ACT Government is doing at Tidbinbilla to get this species back into the wild where it belongs!

This is an 800m walk with a gentle slope and several stairs. Each wander will be approximately 45 minutes. Remember to wear good walking shoes, bring drinking water, dress appropriately for the weather and be sun safe.

Come and learn about King Arthur, Lady Yellow, and Princess Annii, Tidbinbilla’s resident ‘royal’ koalas! Koalas have featured and delighted visitors at Tidbinbilla for almost 100 years and continue to be a favourite animal attraction.

Join a member of Tidbinbilla’s Threatened Species Team who will share stories and insights into these iconic and fascinating species at our Koala display enclosure.

Experience a true taste of the Australian bush! Join us for freshly brewed billy tea and warm damper, a traditional bush bread once cooked by swagmen and stockmen over an open campfire.

Kids can mix up their own damper and cook it over an open fire, and we’ll also brew up some billy tea to wash it down.

Don't forget to wear suitable walking shoes, bring drinking water, dress appropriately for the weather and be sun safe.

‘Cubby House Rules’ is back for the school holidays. Using the materials provided and a little creativity, kids can build their own dream cubby, right in the heart of Tidbinbilla.

The art of nature – Rock Valley Homestead landscapes – Tidbinbilla School Holiday Program

Join Ranger Bec to explore Tidbinbilla landscapes through a creative and engaging art activity. Starting out from Rock Valley Homestead you will join Ranger Bec on a short guided walk and along the way the group will gather natural materials before returning to Rock Valley Homestead where you will turn these natural items into unique tools to be used to paint the Tidbinbilla landscape.

Going Bush at Tid – Young Rangers Program

Going bush and knowing where you are venturing off track into the mountains surrounding Tidbinbilla valley is quite rewarding. Learn some basic map reading skills and how to prepare going bush. Ranger Jack will give you tips on how to thrive in the bush. A BBQ lunch to celebrate the end of the year’s program will be provided.
