Tidbinbilla Open Day
The annual Tidbinbilla Open Day is on again this year on 7 October 2018. The festivities will run from 10am – 3pm in a relaxed family friendly atmosphere with free entry to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve all day.
Mark this date in your diary for a fun-filled day of nature-based experiences, kid’s activities, live music, displays, demonstrations and more - held in the greatest venue of all, the great outdoors!
The theme this year is ‘Rediscover Tidbinbilla’ where we encourage you to explore the Reserve with renewed curiosity and a fresh perspective.
Open Day Program
- Main event located at Sheedys Picnic Area with exciting activities occurring throughout the reserve.
- Event parking is at Dalsetta with a 5 minute walk to Sheedys. Disabled permit parking is located at Sheedy.
- Accessible ACTION buses will shuttle visitors between Sheedys and Dalsetta with stops also at Rock Valley, Flints, Ribbon Gum and the Sanctuary Main Entrance.

Rock Valley Program
10am – 2pm - Picnic at Rock Valley
Turn off and tune in to the simple pleasures of the past at Rock Valley Homestead, during the Tidbinbilla Open Day. Drop in for a visit or bring a picnic hamper and rug and immerse yourself in the stories, sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear.
The Tidbinbilla Pioneers will share their stories of life in the Valley, a working model of one of the eucalyptus distilleries formerly in use at Tidbinbilla will be operable, and the air will be filled with the sounds of play and laughter during traditional kid’s games and crafting activities.
Guided Walk - Tidbinbilla Unearthed - 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm
Discover the outstanding natural heritage and settler history of the Tidbinbilla Valley on this 1 hour, 600m guided walk around Turkey Hill, led by Tidbinbilla’s volunteer interpreter guides. Suitable for families. Starts and finishes from the information stall at Dalsetta.
Guided Walk - Web of Life Wander - 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm
Explore the interconnections between living creatures and their natural environment in this informative 1 hour wander through the Sanctuary led by Tidbinbilla’s volunteer interpreter guides. Suitable for families. Meet at the Sanctuary Main Entrance.
Activity - ‘Get Crafty’ and the ‘Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby’ immersive – 11am – 2:30pm
These are kids crafting and discovery activities in the Sanctuary. It is recommended families complete the ‘Web of Life Wander’ with volunteer interpreters and then kids complete crating and exploring with Get Crafty’ and ‘Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby immersive’. Located near the ‘Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby Habitat’ in the Sanctuary.
Activity - Who’s that swimming in my pond? - 11am – 2:30pm
Though pond-dipping, identification and magnification discover the tiny and wet world of waterbugs at the start of the aquatic food chain in the Sanctuary at Tidbinbilla. Meet near the Vet Centre in the Sanctuary.
